Hong Kong Officials Skip Bitcoin Event Amid Eric Trump's Presence
Hong Kong Officials Withdraw From Bitcoin Conference
Two senior Hong Kong figures, Eric Yip Chee-hang of the Securities and Futures Commission and legislator Johnny Ng Kit-chong, have pulled out of an upcoming Bitcoin conference where Eric Trump is scheduled to speak. This information comes from a report by the South China Morning Post.
In early July, the Bitcoin Asia conference, scheduled for August 28-29, confirmed that Donald Trump's son would be a headline speaker. He is expected to discuss Bitcoin’s future and Asia’s growing influence on the crypto market.
Yip and Ng were listed as keynote speakers as of July 14 but were quietly removed from the program by August 28.
Sources told SCMP that lawmakers were advised to avoid the Bitcoin Asia event if Eric Trump was present. The origin of this advisory remains unclear.
“There is a request to lawmakers, asking them not to attend the forum that also features Trump’s son,” said one source. “And I think we all understood the reason.”
American Bitcoin, supported by Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., is reportedly considering acquiring companies in Japan and potentially Hong Kong to establish regional crypto treasury vehicles, according to a Financial Times report earlier this month.
